Neuroscience · Lesson 03
Learning, Memory, and Attention
Practice changes systems when retrieval meets feedback.
Learning targets
By the end of this lesson, you can
- Differentiate working memory, episodic memory, and procedural learning.
- Explain how attention shapes what is encoded and later retrieved.
- Use retrieval practice and spacing as evidence-informed learning strategies.
Core mechanism
Memory is reconstructed in systems
Working memory holds a small, goal-relevant set of information briefly. Episodic memory supports recollection of events, while procedural learning supports skilled performance. These systems cooperate, but they are not interchangeable files in one mental drawer.
Illustrated scene card
Worked scene: learning a route
Observation: At first you consciously rehearse turns; later landmarks cue the route and the sequence needs less deliberate attention.
Why it matters: Practice changes what is easy to retrieve and execute. Spaced attempts with feedback reveal what is not yet stable better than rereading does.
Retrieval practice
Retrieve before you review
Answer aloud or on paper first. Then reveal the feedback and repair any gaps.
- Which memory system temporarily holds a phone number while you dial it?
- What learning activity gives a stronger signal about what you know: rereading or trying to recall?
- Why does spacing practice help?
Professor’s noteConfidence is a feeling. Retrieval is evidence.
Lesson summary and completion
What to retain
Working memory temporarily maintains goal-relevant information such as a phone number. Trying to recall gives a stronger diagnostic signal because it requires retrieval. Spacing requires effortful retrieval after some forgetting and distributes learning across time.
Save your reading and continue when ready. All retrieval and physical practice in this extended lesson is optional; reading completion does not record a passing test or professional competence.
Ready to continue? The reading action is always available here. This is a reading position, not proof of understanding. Nothing advances automatically.
