The Beat: Music's Steady Footsteps

Find and count a steady beat in groups of four.

A beat is the steady pulse under music—the part you could clap or walk to. Think of four even footsteps: 1, 2, 3, 4. Keeping those footsteps even matters more than playing fast.

Three tiny steps

  1. Put one hand on your leg.
  2. Say: 1, 2, 3, 4 at an even speed.
  3. Tap once for every number. Do three groups without speeding up.
