Two students argue about the phrase in Dei Verbum 11 that Scripture teaches without error 'that truth which God wanted put into sacred writings for the sake of salvation'. One says the Church therefore restricts inerrancy to faith and morals and leaves the rest of Scripture free to be false; the other says the Church did not restrict it that way. Which reading is correct, and why?The second: Dei Verbum 11 affirms that the books of Scripture teach 'solidly, faithfully and without error' the saving truth, and the Church has refused the theory that inspiration and inerrancy cover only parts of Scripture - Pius XII's Divino Afflante Spiritu called narrowing inspiration to certain parts 'absolutely wrong and forbidden'. The clause names the purpose of what God wanted taught; it does not license error in what the human author actually asserts, and the harder cases are handled by asking what the author asserts in his literary form (Dei Verbum 12) and by the principle that Scripture does not intend to teach the constitution of the physical world (Divino Afflante Spiritu 18; CCC 105-107).The first: the clause limits inerrancy to faith and morals, so the Church permits error in matters of history and natural science while guaranteeing the doctrinal content.

A homilist tells the congregation that 'Rome has quietly abandoned the historical character of the Gospels; modern Catholic exegesis now shows they are the community's creation, and the old teaching no longer binds'. His assistant replies that the Pontifical Biblical Commission requires the historical-critical method and Dei Verbum 19 still stands. Who is right, and what is the precise position of the Church?The homilist: since the historical-critical method has become indispensable, whatever conclusions it reaches about the Gospels' creation by the community have the Church's approval, and Dei Verbum 19 is superseded.The assistant: the Pontifical Biblical Commission's The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church (1993) calls the historical-critical method 'the indispensable method for the scientific study of the meaning of ancient texts' and says its proper understanding 'not only admits the use of this method but actually requires it', while Dei Verbum 19 still teaches that the Gospels hand on the truth about Jesus, whose words and deeds the evangelists selected and interpreted without falsifying them. The method is therefore required for study and bounded in its conclusions: the same document acknowledges the criticisms made of 'the classic use' of the method and that some exegetes reached positions 'contrary to the faith of the church'.

A catechist claims that the Church 'changed her teaching' when the doctrine of the Church grew from the apostolic faith to the definitions of Nicaea and Chalcedon, and therefore any later doctrine can be reversed. A second catechist replies that genuine development never contradicts what came before. Which account matches the Church's own texts?The second, with precision: Vincent of Lérins's rule, adopted by the First Vatican Council, is that progress is 'in the same doctrine, the same sense, and the same understanding', and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith's Mysterium Ecclesiae 5 allows that a dogmatic truth may be expressed 'incompletely (but not falsely)' and later more perfectly, while denying that dogmatic formulas are merely approximate or relative - it explicitly condemns the opinion that formulas cannot 'signify truth in a determinate way'. Change in discipline and in prudential judgement is real and often reversible; the deposit does not reverse.The first: since doctrine develops, nothing already taught is secure, and the later formula measures only the faith of its own time, so a doctrine may be replaced when understanding advances.

Question 4

At Chalcedon the definition was accepted by the imperial church and not by the Coptic, Syriac, Armenian and Ethiopian churches, which remain separated from it today. A student asks what that does to the authority of a council's definitions. What is the accurate answer?That a definition needs the reception of the whole Church to be valid, so the rejection by the Oriental Orthodox churches shows the Chalcedonian formula to be a Western formulation rather than a binding definition.That non-reception by some churches does not annul a definition, while reception remains the sign and the means by which a council's teaching bears fruit: Vatican I's Pastor Aeternus teaches that the Roman pontiff's definitions are irreformable 'of themselves, and not by the consent of the church', so authority does not depend on acceptance. At the same time the 1985 Extraordinary Synod insists that 'the Church is one and the same throughout all the councils' and that it is 'not licit to separate the pastoral character from the doctrinal vigor' of the documents, so a council's teaching is received and lived within one Church, and the divisions that follow are real and lamentable rather than proving the definition null.

A parish bulletin states: 'Since Vatican II taught that the Church rejects nothing true and holy in other religions, all religions are paths to salvation, and interreligious dialogue replaces evangelisation.' Which correction is accurate?Nostra Aetate 2 does not say that other religions are salvific paths on a par with the Church; it says the Church rejects nothing true and holy in them while declaring that she 'proclaims, and ever must proclaim Christ the way, the truth, and the life', and Nostra Aetate 5 says of other religions' precepts and teachings that they 'often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men'. The position on salvation for those who do not know Christ is stated in Lumen Gentium 16 and applied in CCC 843, and when the Church states that she is the universal sacrament of salvation she also holds that all grace is mediated by Christ, as Dominus Iesus 4 and 16 restate: dialogue is part of evangelising mission, not a substitute for it.The bulletin is right in substance: Nostra Aetate teaches that the great religions are means of salvation, and the Church's practice since the council has treated dialogue as an alternative to mission.
