Question 4

Explain why самый больше всех is not standard, and give one correct superlative structure for a noun.It is not standard because самый cannot appear before an adjective of quantity.It combines the самый construction with a comparative and marks the ranking twice. A correct structure is самый большой, where самый agrees with the noun.

Question 5

Write the phrases for two tables and five tables and explain why the noun form differs.Два стола uses the genitive singular, and пять столов uses the genitive plural, because the numeral boundary falls between four and five.Both use the nominative plural, since any count above one makes the noun plural in Russian.

What does the quantity word сколько require of the noun that follows it, and why?The nominative, because сколько is a question word and nouns stay in the nominative after questions.The genitive. Quantity words express amount rather than a specific count, so the noun follows them in the genitive.
