Unit quiz: Argument structure and evidential support
Check understanding, separately from reading
5 questions · 80% to pass · no timer. This quiz checks the lessons in this unit. These authored questions assess recognition and application of the taught distinctions, not professional qualification. You may review the lessons and retry. Repeat attempts reuse the question bank; a remembered answer is not proof of transfer to a new situation.
Saving a lesson records reading only. Previous lesson completions have not been converted into passing scores. You can continue reading without a pass; the assessment remains unpassed.
Question 1
“All mammals breathe; whales are mammals; so whales breathe” gives premises followed by a conclusion. “Whales are beautiful” alone offers no supporting reason.
Question 2
“All cats are planets; Luna is a cat; so Luna is a planet” is valid in form but has a false first premise. Validity is not factual accuracy.
Question 3
“All squares have four sides; this figure is a square; therefore it has four sides” is sound if the described figure really is square.
Question 4
Observing many swans of one color supports an expectation about another swan, but an unobserved population could differ. Sampling location matters.
Question 5
The claim that all birds fly fails for penguins. That does not refute the weaker claim that many bird species fly.
